RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The 15th ranked UC San Diego men's volleyball team lost its third consecutive match Saturday, a 3-1 setback at Cal Baptist in non-conference action at Van Dyne Gym. The Tritons took the opening set 25-20 but lost the ensuing three by scores of 25-21, 27-25 and 25-18.
UCSD (2-5) got eight kills, two aces and six digs and two blocks from outside hitter Carl Eberts. Middles Calvin Ross and Sebastian Brady each had seven kills with Brady adding six blocks. For the second straight night, Phil Bannan and freshman Mike Brunsting split the setting duties with Bannan collecting 24 assists and Brunsting totaling 12. Chase Frishman had a match high seven digs.
Cal Baptist (6-3), the reigning NAIA national champion, was led by Sebastian Steigmyier with a match high 17 kills, five aces, seven digs and four blocks. Levi Cabral followed with 10 kills, three aces, three digs and four blocks.
Blocks were being thrown up all night with the Lancers finishing with 14 and the Tritons 11.
Neither team hit exceptionally well, but Cal Baptist held a .221 (47-24-104) to .179 (38-21-95) advantage. Both squads struggled from the service line with 19 errors each.
UC San Diego had defeated Cal Baptist 3-1 on Jan. 8 at the Gaucho Collegiate Invitational in Santa Barbara.
