SEASIDE, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's soccer team
rebounded from a short two-match winless streak to secure a 4-1 road victory
against Cal State Monterey Bay Friday.
The Tritons dominated play for the entirety of the match, outshooting the Otters
24-3. Not all of the chances added up to results early on though, as UCSD and
CSUMB took a 1-1 score into halftime. While Sarah McTigue notched the eventual
game-winning score at 56:36, the floodgates opened for the Tritons in the final
10 minutes of regulation when both Alyssa Newcomer and Annette Ilg registered scores
to put the match well out of reach.
"A couple of our goals came off set plays and that's something we've been stressing in practice," Tritons' head coach Brian McManus said. "It was good to get contributions from a lot of different players but Sunday will be a different and difficult game. We'll be playing on a smaller field with a much more physical squad in San Francisco State."
Friday's game pushes UCSD's conference record to the .500 mark at 2-2-1 and
drops the Otters to 0-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Tritons will complete its Northern California swing on Sunday with a 2 p.m. match
at SFSU.
Through the first 25 minutes of the match Friday, UCSD held CSUMB without a
shot. Sophomore forward Gabi Hernandez put the Tritons on the board first at 27:50,
sending a header into the back of the net after receiving a cross from Hayley
Johnson.
Less than four minutes later, the Otters rallied to tie the match at 1-1 when a
cross from Gabriella Bozzo led to Marlina Massagli's finish within the box past
UCSD goalkeeper Kristin Armstrong. Despite outshooting CSUMB 10-2 through the first
45 minutes, the Tritons couldn't gain an edge on the scoreboard from their
offensive pressure.
McTigue helped UCSD capture the lead once again in the 57th minute, firing a header past Otters'
netminder Graciela Holguin. Shelby Wong earned the assist on the score with a
tremendous cross into the box. The goal marked No. 13 for McTigue's career.
The Tritons extended their lead to 3-1 at 80:07, when Newcomer knocked in a
rebound shot following a free kick from Johnson. Two minutes and 26 second
later, Ilg capitalized on another rebound chance and tallied her team-high
fourth goal of the season as Lindsay Mills recorded the assist.
Armstrong recorded one save on the afternoon, while Holguin collected eight
stops while allowing the four scores.
Sunday's opponent, the Gators of SFSU, defeated Cal State East Bay on Friday, 2-0. Currently, SFSU holds a 4-2-1 overall record while going 3-2 in conference so far this season.
