BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The 18th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team fell to No. 8 Loyola Marymount 13-10 in the Western Water Polo Association Championship game on Sunday afternoon in Bakersfield. While the Tritons played even with the Lions for three quarters, it was the second quarter that did the Tritons in, as LMU held a 4-1 scoring advantage in the quarter. UCSD outscored the Lions 7-6 in the second half but it was not enough to pull out the win.
Audra Bloom scored four goals to lead the Tritons, while
Hanalei Crowell added three scores.
UCSD's season comes to a close at 18-19, while LMU earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships on the San Diego State campus.
In addition to Bloom and Crowell's combined seven goals, T.C. Coles, Stephanie Heinrich and Jessica Tran also scored for UCSD.
LMU was paced by Mary Ann Campos with five goals while Anne Scott and Kimberly Benedetti scored two goals apiece.
Early on, the teams would exchange scores as Crowell's goal tied the game at 2-2 with :29 remaining in the opening period. LMU scored with just :02 left to take a 3-2 advantage through one quarter.
The last goal of the first quarter was part of a 4-0 run by the Lions as they extended the lead to 6-2. LMU led 7-3 at halftime.
The Tritons pulled within 8-6 on Tran's goal with 4:27 remaining in the third quarter. LMU scored the next three goals to take an 11-6 edge.
UCSD would score the final goal of the third and first of the fourth to pull within 11-8 with 6:35 remaining. That would be as close as the Tritons would get, as LMU won the game 13-10.
