LA JOLLA, Calif. -The 14th-ranked UC San Diego men's volleyball team was defeated by No. 10 UC Irvine for the third time this season, losing to the Anteaters 30-23, 30-13, 30-21 on Friday night in RIMAC Arena. UC Irvine was in control for much of the night, hitting at a .416 clip, while the Tritons were held to a .053 hitting percentage.
Adrian Guthals provided the offense for the Tritons with a team-high 10 kills on .467 hitting. UC Irvine was led by Carson Clark with 17 kills. With the loss, UCSD drops to 8-18, 4-15 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while UC Irvine improves to 14-13, 9-11 MPSF.
Guthals was UCSD's only student-athlete with at least 10 kills. Jason Spangler added six kills while Cyrus Kiani tallied five kills in six attempts without an error.
Phil Bannan had 28 assists and seven digs while Andrew Kaban had a match-high nine digs.
UC Irvine outblocked UCSD 17.5 - 7.0.
UCI's Austin D'Amore led the UCI blocking with 12 blocks while Clark added seven blocks.
In the first set, the Tritons committed 12 attack errors while UCI committed only five. The last tie came at 9-9 and UCI went on a 10-4 run to take a 19-13 lead. UCSD would cut the deficit down to five points, but the Anteaters would cruise to the 30-23 win.
The Tritons cut down on the errors in the second set, but UCI committed no attack errors and hit at a .667 clip in the second set. The Anteaters scored nine of the first 12 points and never looked back, taking the second set at 30-13.
UCI hit at a .433 clip in the third set and built an 18-13 lead. UCSD climbed back to within 22-19 on a Bannan kill, and UC Irvine called its first timeout of the night. UCSD closed within 23-21 after a Spangler kill, but the Anteaters scored the final seven points of the set for the sweep.
UCSD is back in action on Saturday night when it hosts No. 7 UCLA. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in RIMAC Arena.
