BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The 18th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team trailed Sonoma State in the first quarter but recovered to defeat the Seawolves 10-7 in the first-round of the Western Water Polo Association Championships in Bakersfield. T.C. Coles paced UCSD with three goals while Audra Bloom and Hanalei Crowell scored two goals apiece.

With the win, UCSD improves to 17-18 and advances to the WWPA semifinals where it will face Colorado State on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Earlier in the day, Colorado State upset Cal State East Bay 10-8, advancing to its first-ever WWPA semifinal game.

In addition to UCSD's multiple goal scorers in Coles, Bloom and Crowell, Kirsten Bates, Felicia Orozco and Stephanie Heinrich added goals.

Heinrich drew three ejections in the game, giving her 19 ejections drawn this season, a new single-season school record. The old mark was 16 set by Natalie Hockett during the 2007 campaign.

Sonoma State was led by Emily Pearce with three goals scored.

After SSU took a 3-1 lead after the first quarter, the Tritons responded by scoring five times in the second quarter and took their first lead on a goal by Coles with 1:26 remaining at 5-4. With :26 remaining in the half, Crowell scored and gave the Tritons a 6-4 lead at halftime.

UCSD scored the first three goals of the third quarter on strikes from Coles, Bloom and Orozco. UCSD led 9-4 before SSU tacked on another score to end the third at 9-5.

UCSD's Heinrich added a goal for the Tritons in the fourth to close out the scoring at 10-7 UCSD.

UCSD and Colorado State square off at 1:00 p.m. in the WWPA semifinals on Saturday in Bakersfield.
