LA JOLLA, Calif. - Senior
Stephanie Heinrich scored four straight goals to open the match and finished with five overall, leading the 17th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team to an 11-7 triumph over No. 20 Brown on Saturday afternoon at Canyonview Pool. The Tritons led by as many as six goals and cruised to their sixth consecutive victory.
UCSD, which also defeated Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday, improves to 13-14 overall on the season. The Tritons have won 11 of their last 13 since dropping six straight from February 12-28. Head coach
Brad Kreutzkamp's squad is now 5-3 at home.
Brown falls to 18-7 on the season. The Bears defeated San Bernardino 7-6 in overtime before jumping back in the pool to square off with the Tritons.
After scoring a total of six goals in the 6-3 win over the Coyotes earlier in the day, UCSD reached that total in the opening period against Brown, taking a commanding 6-2 advantage after the first quarter. Heinrich set the tone, scoring four times in the first 3:18 to put the Bears on their heels early on.
"After our performance this morning, I'm very pleased with the way we played this afternoon," Kreutzkamp said. "We were very resilient against a top-20 team.
Stephanie Heinrich scoring the first four goals of the game really gave us the type of senior leadership we needed and showed (Brown) we came to play."
A goal by Hanalei Crowell and Heinrich's fifth score made it 8-2, as UCSD scored the first two goals of the second quarter. Avery Mosser and Lauren Present answered for the Bears, before Kirsten Bates found the net to make it 9-4.
After both teams scored twice in the third, Brown made things interesting down the stretch, pulling within 10-7 with 6:11 remaining in the fourth. The Triton defense shut the Bears down from there, however, controlling the ball and using up the shot clock on each possession.
Bates scored with 36 seconds left on the clock for the final 11-7 margin.
Joining Heinrich, Bates, and Crowell in the scoring column for UCSD was T.C. Coles, Audra Bloom, and Felicia Orozco.
Present and Sarah Glick had two goals apiece to lead the Bears.
The Tritons will now travel to Northern California next weekend to take on Cal State East Bay on Friday at 5:00 p.m., before taking part in the Santa Clara Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
