LA JOLLA, Calif. - Trailing 3-2 after the first period, the 17th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team proceeded to score the matches' final four goals to defeat visiting Cal State San Bernardino 6-3 on Saturday morning at Canyonview Pool. The Tritons held the Coyotes without a score over the final 26:12 to record their 10th win in 12 matches.
Junior
Hanalei Crowell tallied two goals to pace UCSD, while Misty Vu scored twice for CSUSB. The Tritons improve to 12-14 overall in 2010, while the Coyotes drop to 13-16.
"I thought Cal State San Bernardino played as well as I've seen them play all year," head coach
Brad Kreutzkamp said. "Thankfully, our defense kept us in the game until the offense woke up in the fourth quarter."
UCSD took a 2-1 advantage on a goal by
Audra Bloom with less than two minutes in, but Vu and Marilyn Doughty would answer for CSUSB, giving the visitors a one goal lead after the opening quarter.
After neither team scratched in the second period, the Tritons finally got it going in the third.
T.C. Coles ended a nearly 21 minute scoring drought for UCSD with a goal with 1:20 left in the period that tied the game at 3-3. The score was Coles' first as a Triton after she spent the past two seasons at Long Beach State and San Diego Mesa College.
Senior Stephanie Heinrich put in what proved to be the deciding goal 1:02 into the final quarter and Crowell and
Kirsten Bates would find the net in the final three and a half minutes to put the finishing touches on the Triton victory.
UCSD is back in the pool to take on Brown on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
