UCSD Finishes 14th At Hanny/Stanislaus Invite; CCAA Championships Next

TURLOCK, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's golf team finished 14th out of 17 teams competing in the 2010 Hanny/Stanislaus Invitational, carding a 305 in the final round at the Turlock Golf and Country Club on Tuesday. The Tritons, who entered the day in 14th place with a score of 616, posted their lowest round of the tournament but were unable to climb in the standings.

Head coach Mike Wydra's squad finished with a three-round total of 921, one stroke behind Saint Martin's University. Senior Raj Samra was UCSD's top finisher at +9, 225 after carding the team's lowest individual round with a 71 on Tuesday. He finished tied for 36th place overall.

Freshman Anubhav Rastogi had the next-lowest score for the Tritons, finishing at +14, 230 following an 81 in the final round. Keith Okasaki carded a 76 for a three-round total of 232, while Michael Neustadt's 77 gave him a final tally of 239.

Cal State Stanislaus and Cal State San Bernardino finished as co-champions of the event, posting identical scores of +7, 871. The host Warriors held a three shot lead after two rounds, but the Coyotes fired a 280 on Tuesay to get back in the hunt. Stanislaus shot a 289 in the final round.

Grand Canyon University took third at 876 (291), finishing one stroke in front of Chico State at 877 (286).

Cal State San Bernardino's Gene Webster Jr. entered the day with a three-stroke lead and went on to easily win individual medalist honors after shooting an impressive 63 on Tuesday -- the lowest round in the history of the Hanny/Stanislaus Invite. He finished with a final score of 18-under par, 198, which is also a tournament record.

Ryan Indovina and Calvin McCall of Cal State Dominguez Hills finished in second and third place after carding final rounds of 70 and 73, respectively. Indovina finished at 6-under par, 210, one shot better than McCall.

The Tritons will now travel to Paso Robles for the 2010 California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships April 19-20 at the Hunter Ranch Golf Club. UCSD finished in sixth place in 2009, carding a final score of 889 on the 6,741-yard, par-72 Hunter Ranch course.

Sonoma State was last year's conference champion. The Seawolves went on to win the NCAA Division II National title in Blaine, Wash.
