SANTA CLARA, Calif. -The 17th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team split two games at the Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara on Saturday afternoon at the Sullivan Aquatic Center. After opening with a 16-8 loss to No. 6 San Jose State, the Tritons defeated Sonoma State by an 11-6 score.
Hanalei Crowell scored a combined seven goals in the two games, while
Stephanie Heinrich scored four goals in two games. UCSD will face Colorado State and No. 3 Cal on Sunday to conclude tournament action.
In the win against Sonoma State, the Tritons jumped out to a 7-3 lead at halftime. UCSD put the game away in the third quarter by scoring four more goals and taking an 11-4 lead. UCSD and SSU scored one goal each in the final quarter for the final 11-6.
Crowell scored four goals against the Seawolves, while Heinrich and T.C. Coles scored two goals each. Kirsten Bates, Audra Bloom and Jessica Tran also scored.
Markayla Quane had eight saves against SSU and Allie Taylor added two saves.
Against San Jose State, Crowell scored three goals while Bates and Heinrich scored twice apiece. Felicia Orozco also scored for UCSD. Quane had three saves while Taylor had five saves.
SJSU scored 11 first-half goals to take a commanding 11-4 lead at halftime. In the second half, the Tritons came within one goal of the Spartans, trailing by just one goal as the final was 16-8.
