POMONA, Calif. - Despite missing a top singles player, the No. 15 UC San Diego women's tennis team gutted out a 6-3 road victory against No. 25 Cal Poly Pomona Wednesday.
The Tritons, pushing their season record to 9-4 and extending their conference winning streak to 64 matches, received pivotal comeback victories from Samantha Yeung and Roxanna Pourmirzaie at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions. The Broncos fall to 10-4 in 2010, including a 3-2 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Pourmirzaie, a junior out of San Jose, filled in Wednesday for Natalie Varnay, who could not make the trip to Pomona because of an academic obligation. Paired with Taskeen Bains at No. 1 doubles, Pourmirzaie kept the match close but the duo eventually fell, 8-6, to the Broncos' Jennifer Chow and Jackie Trendt. In singles though, Pourmirzaie rallied to top CPP's Fallon Blattner, 5-7, 6-3, 3-2 (retired). Before Wednesday, Pourmirzaie's only win of 2010 came in singles during the Tritons' last match, a 7-2 win at Hawaii Hilo.
The clinching point came from Yeung, who holds the team lead in singles victories with eight on the season. At the No. 5 position Wednesday, Yeung defeated the Broncos' Kaitlin Wooldridge, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
CPP and UCSD started the match at 11 a.m., rather than the original time of 12 p.m., because of expected rain in the area for the late afternoon.
The Tritons, now 5-0 in the league this year, will look to extend their CCAA run when they host Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday at 11 a.m.
