LAIE, Hawaii - The No. 17 UC San Diego women's team dropped a 9-0 decision to No. 3 BYU-Hawaii Wednesday in the first of three matches for the Tritons on the island.
The loss snaps a three-match winning streak for the Tritons and drops their record to 7-3 overall on the season. The Seasiders improve to 15-0 in 2010 and have reeled off three-straight sweeps.
One of the closest matches of the day came at No. 1 doubles, where UCSD's Taskeen Bains and Natalie Varnay dropped a narrow 8-6 decision to BYUH's Elwen Li and Yuan Jia.
Up against the top-ranked doubles pair in the nation, Bains and Varnay played some of their best tennis Wednesay in keeping the contest close.
At No. 4 singles, Tritons' senior Anita Athavale lost a tough 6-4, 7-6 matchup to the Seasiders' Shawni Porter. It marked the first loss of 2010 for Athavale, who now holds a singles record of 4-1.
UCSD returns to action Thursday with a 9 a.m. contest against No. 12 Hawaii Pacific.
