LOS ANGELES - The No. 19 UC San Diego women's tennis team cruised to an 8-1 victory over No. 31 Cal State L.A. Sunday, tacking on yet another match to its conference winning streak.
Despite the fact that the two teams are ranked fourth and fifth respectively in the West Region, the Tritons overwhelmed the Golden Eagles Sunday and secured the convincing road win. UCSD (4-2 overall) has not lost to a California Collegiate Athletic Association opponents in 63 matches. CSULA falls to 0-3 in league play with the loss.
In the singles ladder Sunday, Natalie Varnay and Anita Athavale picked up their first wins of 2010 in straight-set fashion. Cindy Dao, Samantha Yeung and Katie Mulloy also collected singles victories, each improving their record to 4-2 this season.
The Tritons' top singles player, Taskeen Bains, suffered a close loss to Dora Kiss, 7-5, 6-7 (10-7).
UCSD swept CSULA in the doubles portion Sunday, as the Golden Eagles only managed to win six games combined between the three positions. At the No. 2 position, the Tritons' Athavale and Jacquelyn Davis improved to 5-1 in 2010 with their win.
The UCSD squad returns home to host Villanova on Monday. The Tritons will continue CCAA play on Saturday with a road contest against Cal Poly Pomona.
