SAN FRANCISCO - The UC San Diego women's basketball team outscored San Francisco State 17-7 to open the second half and went on to defeat the host Gators by a 58-50 margin in a defensive struggle on Friday night at SFSU's Main Gymnasium.
Chelsea Carlisle led all scorers with 14 points, while
Annette Ilg finished with 12 and
Tiffany Hunter added 11, as the Tritons swept the season series with the Gators.
UCSD trailed by as many as five points early on, but finally restored order in the second half to record the program's 15th straight victory over SFSU. The Tritons have not lost to the Gators since March 7, 2003 and have won 19 of 28 meetings between the two schools overall.
After scoring a season-high 96 points in Tuesday's victory over Cal State East Bay, UCSD finished with just 58 against the pesky SFSU defense, with Carlisle, Ilg, and Hunter combining for 37. The Tritons did manage to shoot better than 43% from the floor against a defensive unit that came in limiting opponents to just 33%, the third-lowest mark in the nation.
UCSD improves to 22-2 overall in 2009-10, winning for the eighth time in 10 road games this season. The Tritons' record now stands at 17-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with three regular season games remaining. UCSD can clinch at least a share of a second consecutive CCAA regular season title and the top seed in next month's conference tournament with a victory over Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday.
San Francisco State, which had won four in a row entering Friday's matchup, falls to 13-14 overall and 9-10 in the CCAA with the loss.
Carlisle hit just 5-of-14 shots from the floor, but finished with four rebounds and a game-high six assists in 38 minutes. Ilg added four boards and a pair of assists to go with her fourth straight double-digit scoring effort, while Hunter connected on 5-of-10 attempts from the field and grabbed nine rebounds.
Andrea Ohlssen scored 13 points to lead the Gators, while reigning CCAA Player of the Week Donisha Tate finished with nine points, six rebounds, and a pair of steals. Dominique Hunter hauled in a game-high 13 rebounds to go with four points and three assists.
"We really fought hard for this win," head coach
Charity Elliott said. "San Francisco State is a very good team and we knew it was going to be a battle. We had some key contributions from our bench and Lauren (Freidenberg) really got us going in the second half."
UCSD held a 19-12 lead with eight and a half minutes left in the first half, but SFSU scored 14 of the next 17 points to take a 26-22 lead at the break. The Tritons missed 10 of their final 11 shots in the period, while Ohlssen and Jessica Hout-Freeman combined to score 10 straight for the Gators.
Freidenberg scored back-to-back baskets to spark a 12-3 UCSD run to open the second half, as the Tritons took the lead for good. Ilg and Carlisle drained big threes during the stretch, as UCSD took a 34-29 advantage.
The Gators closed to within one on three separate occasions under the seven minute mark, but Carlisle answered with a bucket each time to keep the home team at bay. Hout-Freeman hit a jumper to cut the deficit to 52-50 with 2:39 remaining, but SFSU would not score again and UCSD put in the last six points for the final margin.
Tipoff for UCSD's contest against Cal State Monterey Bay is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the Otter Sports Complex.
