LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 13th-ranked UC San Diego men's volleyball team was swept by No. 1 Cal State Northridge 30-26, 30-26, 30-27 on Friday night in RIMAC Arena. The Tritons were even with the Matadors in each set, tied at 20-20, but CSUN would pull out each set with late rallies. UCSD was led by
Frank Fritsch with 17 kills while
Joel Davidson added 11 kills. CSUN was led by Kevin McKniff and Jacek Ratajczak with 12 kills apiece. With the loss, UCSD drops to 4-8, 1-6 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation while the Matadors improve to 11-2, 8-2 MPSF.
Jason Spangler added 10 kills for UCSD. Andrew Kaban had a match-high 11 digs while Phil Bannan had 45 assists. The Tritons outblocked CSUN 9.0 - 8.5 as Adrian Guthals had seven kills on .667 hitting and five blocks.
In the first set, the score would be tied 15 times, the final time coming at 23-23 after a Spangler kill. CSUN scored the next five points to take a commanding 28-23 lead. CSUN would close the set with the 30-26 win.
The second set was tied a total of 14 times. The final tie this time coming at 20-20. CSUN would score five of the next six points to lead 25-21. UCSD would cut the deficit down to 27-25 on a Davidson kill, but CSUN took the set 30-26.
UCSD hit at a .500 clip in the third set, and outhit the Matadors who hit .486. The Tritons led CSUN 16-15 after a Guthals kill. CSUN tied the set at 20-20 and scored the next three points on two kills and a UCSD error. UCSD came back within 26-25, but CSUN quickly extended the lead to 28-25. The Matadors took the third set 30-27.
UCSD is back in action on Saturday night when it takes on No. 10 UC Santa Barbara. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in RIMAC Arena.
