Tritons to Face San Francisco State in Opening Round of NCAA Championships

Women's Soccer UCSD

UCSD Win Streak Improves To Eight on Capobianco's Timely Strike

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Courtney Capobianco scored her first goal of the season in the first minute of double-overtime, as the No. 21 UC San Diego women's soccer team escaped with a 1-0 victory on the road against Cal State San Bernardino in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play Sunday afternoon.

The win moves the Tritons to 12-2-2 overall and 10-2-2 in the CCAA. UCSD remains in second place in the CCAA South Division with 32 points, just a point behind first-place Cal State L.A. CSULA also won on Saturday, 2-1, over Cal State Dominguez Hills. CSUSB drops to 9-6-1 overall, 7-6-1 CCAA.

30 seconds in to the second extra-time period, Sarah McTigue fired off a shot from the left side of the box, trying to pick off the right post. The shot sailed just wide, but Capobianco found herself on the end of the attempt, placing it into the back of the net. Capobiano's timely strike moves the Triton win streak to eight matches and their unbeaten run to 11 matches.

UCSD out-shot CSUSB 14-13 and earned five corner kicks, three more than the Coyotes. Anne Wethe unleashed a team-high three shots, while McTigue and Shelby Wong followed with two attempts. Goalkeeper Kristin Armstrong stopped nine shots on the afternoon, including four on-frame from CSUSB striker, Unity Beddingfield.

The two CCAA division winners plus the next two teams with the highest point totals advance to a four-team single elimination tournament to determine the CCAA champion and automatic entrant into the NCAA Division II Championship. If the season were to end Friday night, UCSD would be granted the No. 3 seed, with CSULA, San Francisco State, and Cal State Stanislaus joining the Tritons in the postseason tournament.

UCSD wraps up the regular season next weekend in a home-away series with Cal State East Bay. The Tritons will face the Pioneers in Hayward on Friday Oct. at 4:30 p.m. UCSD will be back home on Halloween against CSUEB. Kick-off is Sunday, Oct. 31 at 2:00 p.m.
