No. 9 UCSD Shuts Down Cal State Stanislaus In Second Half To Win 12th Straight

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The ninth-ranked UC San Diego women's basketball team outscored Cal State Stanislaus 39-14 in the second period en route to a convincing 72-38 home victory on Saturday night at RIMAC Arena. The Tritons opened the half on a decisive 26-2 run to take control and knock off the Warriors for the 13th straight meeting.

UCSD improves to 12-0 overall in 2009-10 and 7-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. The Tritons, who are in the midst of the best start in program history, are now three wins shy of matching the 2008-09 squad, which won 15 straight from December 20-February 13.

Cal State Stanislaus falls to 2-8 overall and 1-5 in the CCAA.

UCSD was absolutely dominant in the second half, holding the Warriors to just 14 points after they scored 57 in the final 20 minutes of a 93-64 win at Cal State East Bay on Thursday. The Triton defense limited Stanislaus to just 17% shooting and forced 10 turnovers in the period.

The Tritons held a 33-24 lead at halftime before scoring 26 of the first 28 points to start the second stanza. UCSD scored 19 straight at one point, turning a 40-26 advantage into a commanding 33-point margin. Daisy Feder and Erin Grady combined for four three-pointers during the stretch as the Tritons put the game away with roughly 10 minutes to play.

UCSD's offense shot 50% (14-28) in the half and finished at 42% (24-57) for the game. The Tritons held a 50-33 advantage on the backboards and outscored the Warriors 32-10 off the bench.

Senior guard Annette Ilg scored 11 points on 3-of-7 shooting to lead the way for UCSD. She was 5-for-5 at the free throw line and finished with three rebounds, two assists, and two steals in just 18 minutes.

Feder finished 3-for-3 from behind the three-point arc to score nine points, while Tiffany Hunter, Lauren Freidenberg, and Grady finished with eight points apiece.

Chelsea Carlisle scored just seven points on 3-of-11 shooting -- her lowest total of the season -- but hauled in three boards and finished with game-highs of six assists and four steals.

UCSD got contributions from nearly everyone in the game as 10 of the 12 players that saw action in the game scored.

Katie Busi scored eight points and pulled down eight boards before fouling out for the Warriors, while Jeanette Rowe finished with eight points, two assists, and three steals.

The Tritons were in control from the outset, taking a 13-9 lead on a three-point play by Carlisle with 15:23 remaining in the first half. The Warriors closed to within 16-15 four minutes later, but UCSD answered with a 11-4 spurt to take a 27-19 cushion, before leading by nine (33-24) at the half.

UCSD continues its four-game homestand next week against Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State. The Tritons will open the week against the Otters Thursday night at 5:30 p.m.
