SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's soccer team picked up a win Sunday, a 2-0 decision over Cal State San Bernardino, to finish a stretch of five road matches which the Tritons went 4-1.
Overall in 2009 the UCSD squad has posted a record of 7-2, while going 5-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. CSUSB, a team that came into Sunday's match tied with the Tritons in the CCAA South Division standings, drops to 5-5 overall and 4-2 during conference action.
On Sunday against the Coyotes, UCSD received two late scores from freshman defender Ellen Wilson and sophomore midfielder Annie Wethe, with both goals coming off corner kick restarts. Tritons' sophomore goalkeeper Kristin Armstrong contributed another strong performance, recording her second straight shutout of the season while posting five saves.
Wilson knocked in her shot inside the far post off a corner kick from senior midfielder Alexia Zatarain in the 69th minute. Less than six minutes later, Wethe headed a shot past the CSUSB keeper after a corner kick from sophomore Sara Bolton. Wilson and Wethe each improved their season goal total to two apiece with the scores.
The Tritons ended up outshooting the Coyotes 14-10 through the match's 90 minutes.
UCSD returns home to take on Sonoma State Friday at 7 p.m. The Seawolves are 4-4-2 overall and 2-2-2 in CCAA play after playing to a 2-2 draw Sunday with Cal State Monterey Bay.
