POMONA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's soccer team returned to its winning ways Friday, topping Cal Poly Pomona Friday 1-0 behind a score from freshman forward Gabi Hernandez and a career night from sophomore goalkeeper Kristin Armstrong.
Hernandez netted the match's only score in the 32nd minute, firing back a rebound shot that found the net, and Armstrong tallied a career-high eight saves to earn her first shutout as a Triton. UCSD recorded two shutouts previously in 2009 but in both cases, Armstrong and backup netminder Kimberly Cushing shared the match minutes. With the win Friday, UCSD improves to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play while CPP drops to 6-3 overall and 2-3 during conference action.
After missing wide on a header roughly 20 minutes into Friday's contest, Hernandez didn't waste her second chance. With fellow freshman Alexa Enlow earning the assist on the play, Hernandez punched the ball in from the front of the goalmouth after recovering a rebound deflection off CPP senior goalkeeper Nakisha Gutierrez.
Armstrong stayed tough toward the end of the first half, stopping a shot from Broncos' freshman forward Angela Garcia with nine seconds before the halftime horn sounded.
Enlow continued her solid play in the second half, knocking a shot off the CPP post at the 59:11 mark that ended up escaping further danger for the Broncos.
Although the Tritons held the corner kick advantage, 10-5 over the 90 minutes of play, each squad fired 13 shots in the match. CPP applied much of the pressure during the first half, firing 11 shots to UCSD's five, while the Tritons controlled the tempo in the second period to the tune of an 8-2 second-half shot advantage.
UCSD will challenge Cal State San Bernardino Sunday at 2 p.m. as the road trip rolls on. CSUSB defeated Cal State East Bay 5-0 in 102-degree heat Friday for its fourth straight win, improving the Coyotes' record to 5-4 overall and 4-1 in the CCAA.
