Danielle Thu set a new school record in the women's hammer throw on Friday, highlighting the first day of the 2009 UCSD Triton Invitational at the Triton Track and Field Stadium.
Competing in the women's hammer invite, Thu broke her own mark of 189'5” set earlier this season with a toss of 189'6”. She placed sixth overall, competing against a field that featured 2008 Olympian Jessica Cosby and last season's Division I National Champion Eva Orban of USC.
Cosby won the event with an impressive mark of 228'11”.
In the women's discus invite, prepster Anna Jelmini matched the national high school record in the event with a mark of 188'4”. Her throw, good enough for fifth place overall, set the stage for a stacked day of competition on Saturday.
UCSD's
Sarah Hendy finished 19th in the discus with a throw of 155', holding her own in a field that featured top throwers from D-I powers Tennessee, Kentucky, and Arizona State.
The Triton Invite continues on Saturday with field events starting at 10:00 a.m. and track events beginning at 11:00.
