AZUSA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego women's track team sent two of its top athletes to compete in two prestigious heptathlons on Wednesday and Thursday, and the pair posted excellent results in the combined event. Junior
Linda Rainwater finished seventh overall in the Mt. SAC Relays, while sophomore
Stephanie LeFever placed third in the California Invitational Heptathlon.
Competing against a field of Elite athletes, Rainwater tallied a school-record 5,104 points, eclipsing her previous best of 5,057 points. The national champion in the heptathlon in 2008, Rainwater finished 52 points behind Missouri's Kaela Rorvig. All six of the athletes that finished in front of her were either from the Division I ranks, unattached, or Elite.
Former Division I standout Sharon Day won the event for Asics with a total of 5,823 points. Hawaii's Annett Wichmann finished second with 5,334 points, while Katia Lannon of Great Britain scored 5,302 to place third.
LeFever also recorded a personal best, finishing with 4,829 points in the California Invitational. Her score ? second only to Rainwater's top two marks all-time ? eclipsed her previous best of 4,749. The mark was also good enough for an NCAA automatic national qualifier.
UC Santa Barbara sophomore Barbara Nwaba took first with a total of 5,039 points, while Amanda Gylling of Adams State finished second, beating out LeFever by a mere 34 points.
Rainwater, LeFever and the rest of the Tritons are back in action on Saturday with the Long Beach Invitational.
