SAN DIEGO, Calif. ? The UC San Diego track and field teams completed a successful second day at the 31st annual Aztec Track & Field Classic Saturday at the San Diego State Sports Deck. The Tritons won a total of 10 events on the day, with five athletes registering NCAA provisional qualifying marks.
Junior
Linda Rainwater won the women's high jump for the second time in four events this season with a mark of 5'5.75”, while teammate
Christine Merrill turned in an impressive effort in the 400 meter hurdles, placing first with a time of 1:00.92. Her time was good enough for a NCAA provisional qualifier.
Donna LeFever won the pole vault open at 11'8”, while
Lyndly Tamura finished second with a mark of 11'4.25”.
Senior
Scott Tsuda finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 48'5.5”, but his jump set a new school record, eclipsing his own mark of 48'2.5” set in 2006. Tsuda was also a NCAA qualifier on the day.
The UCSD throws team had another strong outing, led by
Fred Cook's win in the hammer throw with a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 179'11”.
Nick Morilla placed first in the shot put for the third straight week with a toss of 51'11.25”.
Junior
Marie Archer finished fourth in the women's hammer throw with a distance of 168'5”, but earned a provisional qualifier for her performance.
Kelly Fogarty was a winner in the 100 meter dash, covering the distance in 12.07, while
Bre Schofield took top billing in the 800 with a time of 2:15.01.
The Tritons 4x400 relay team of
Deyna Roberson,
Katie Skorupa,
Anna Lee McGregor, and Merill also posted a victory after finishing with a time of 3:49.99.
UCSD will return to action after final exams with the Cal/Nevada Collegiate Championships March 28-29 in Los Angeles.
