CHICO, Calif. - The 2nd-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team went to a place where it had not won in two years and swept No. 25 Chico State 25-21, 25-23, 25-17 on Halloween evening at Acker Gym.
Sylvia Schmidt had 16 of her match-high 19 kills in the first two sets and

Elaine Chen. With the win, UCSD improves to 24-1, 15-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while Chico State falls to 21-7, 12-6 CCAA.
The match also represented a possible first-round NCAA West Regional match-up as the Wildcats are currently ranked in the bottom half of the bracket while the Tritons are at No. 2, behind Cal State San Bernardino.
Schmidt continued her impressive weekend following up her performance last night (19 kills, 0 errors, .500 hitting) with an equally impressive line of 19 kills and one error on .600 hitting. The .600 hitting clip was a career-high for Schmidt, passing the .583 mark she had against San Francisco State on October 3.
Condon's 14 kills tied her season-high which she recorded at the Triton Invitational in September. Condon also added six digs and two aces.
Hillary Williamson had a team-high 16 digs to go along with her seven kills. Julia Freidenberg added six kills on .556 hitting. Chen finished the night with 41 assists, four aces, four digs and three kills. As a team, UCSD hit at a .345 clip.

Roxanne Brunsting added 11 digs and two aces while Karen Reis also had double-digits in digs with 10.
The first set was well played by both squads as the Tritons hit .405 and the Wildcats hit .367 with no errors in the set. With both teams unable to stop the other, the Tritons served up six aces in the set which proved to be the difference.
Condon began the first run of the first set with a five point scoring run as the Tritons took a 6-1 lead. By the time the Tritons had an 8-3 lead, Schmidt already sent down five kills. The Tritons would go on to lead by as many as seven points at 18-11. Chico State began to chip away and came within 21-19 after consecutive UCSD errors. Simonsen stopped the Chico run with a kill, followed by a Schmidt kill for the 23-19 UCSD lead. The Wildcats would come back within 23-21. Chen served up an ace and Simonsen would end the set with an ace at 25-21 Tritons.
After recording seven kills in the first set, Schmidt sent down nine kills in the second set to pace the Tritons. Chen served up three aces in the set, a set which saw the Wildcats lead for the majority of the points. Chico State would lead by as many as three points at 14-11. UCSD would quickly tie the set on a Chen kill and back-to-back Schmidt kills at 14-14. Chen would later serve up consecutive aces to give the Tritons a 17-16 edge.
Chico State would not go quietly in the second set, taking a 20-19 lead on an ace. The set would be tied at 20, 21 and 22 before Condon broke through with her third kill of the set giving UCSD a 23-22 lead. During that span, the Tritons, got two timely blocks from Williamson/Freidenberg and Condon/Simonsen. Schmidt followed with a kill to force set point. After a Chico State sideout, Schmidt's number was called again and the senior ended the set with a kill at 25-23 UCSD.
The third set was dominated by Condon. The sophomore outside hitter had eight kills in the set as UCSD led by as many as nine points.
Condon sent down four consecutive kills during a 6-0 run and the Tritons led 16-8. UCSD would extend the lead to 20-11 after a Chen kill. The Tritons had three aces in the set, the third and final ace came from Janessa Werhane, ending the match at 25-17 UCSD.
The win at Acker Gym stopped a two-match losing streak on the Chico State campus. It marked the first time the Tritons swept the season series from the Wildcats since the 2005 season, head coach Tom Black's first year at UCSD.
UCSD is back in action on Wednesday, November 4 when it hosts Cal State East Bay. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in RIMAC Arena.
