LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's volleyball team defeated Princeton 30-27, 30-26, 30-24 on Wednesday night in RIMAC Arena. The Tritons hit at a .368 clip for the match, led by Will Ehrman's 16 kills on .522 hitting. “This was a good match for us,” said head coach Kevin Ring. “I felt Ehrman had some good swings and both served and passed well,” said Ring. Also for the Tritons, Frank Fritsch added 12 kills on .400 hitting. Princeton was led by Carl Hamming and Phillip Rosenberg with 10 kills each. With the win, the Tritons improve to 2-4 while the Tigers drop to 0-3.
Phil Bannan ran the Triton offense with 39 assists to go along with six digs. Ehrman and Eric Leserman had seven digs apiece. Jason Spangler added eight kills and was perfect in 13 reception attempts.
UCSD improved to 11-4 all-time against Princeton.
In the first set, the Tritons trailed 17-14 before scoring four straight to gain the lead. UCSD fell behind 20-18 after an attack error but would reclaim the lead at 21-20 on an Ehrman kill. With UCSD up 25-24, Fritsch, Spangler and Ehrman recorded consecutive kills to put the set out of reach. Spangler notched the set ender at 30-27.
The second set was tied at 9-9 and the Tritons sided out and would score two more points on yellow and red cards against Princeton. Leading 12-9, UCSD opened up a 25-18 lead after a Spangler kill.. Princeton pulled within 27-24 but Ehrman recorded two kills around a Princeton error and closed out the set at 30-26 UCSD.
Leading 11-10 in the third set, the Tritons went on an 8-1 run to pull away. UCSD led by as many as eight points in the set and Ehrman put the match away with his 16th kill at 30-24.
UCSD is back in action on Friday when it travels to face Pacific at 7:00 p.m. in Stockton.
