UC San Diego Falls into Second Place After Dropping 1-0 Decision in Double-Overtime

LA JOLLA, Calif. - In a gritty two-overtime battle between the top two teams in the California Collegiate Athletic Association's South Division, Cal State San Bernardino ended up prevailing Sunday in the 102nd minute for a 1-0 victory over the UC San Diego women's soccer team.

Freshman midfielder Kelsey Gudgeon dribbled the ball down the left side and fired a cross into the box to lead CSUSB's final counter attack. Forward Kristina Gomez, a fellow first-year, corralled in Gudgeon's pass and fired it to the left of UCSD senior goalkeeper Jessica McGovern (Reseda, Calif.), who almost got enough of a hand on the shot to keep it out of the net. The ball bounced over the line though and the Coyotes celebrated the game-winner in the early going of the second overtime.

The Tritons fall to 7-2-1 overall while holding a 4-2-0 record within the CCAA. The victory allows CSUSB to take back sole possession of first place in the division at 6-2-2 overall and 4-1-1 in league play.

The Coyotes ended up slightly outshooting the Tritons 10-9 as the match proved to be a tough defensive struggle. With about four minutes to play in the opening half, senior forward Natasha Belak-Berger (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) made an impressive cutback move on the right side, leading to a shot from 12 yards out played straight to CSUSB goalkeeper Laura Lyons.

Less than 60 seconds into the second half, a beautiful give and go combination between Belak-Berger and freshman forward Sarah McTigue (Bellflower, Calif.) resulted in McTigue having an open lane to shoot on the right side but her chance flew just high of the bar.

In the 27th minute, UCSD freshman midfielder Shelby Wong (Danville, Calif.) used her speed to pass a Coyotes' defender on the left side of the box. Her shot managed to get past Lyons but the ball hit the far post and away from danger.

Although the Tritons earned the only true chance in the first overtime for either team when freshman defender Sara Bolton (Carlsbad, Calif.) was able to attempt a corner kick, the CSUSB defense turned UCSD away once again. In the end, the Coyotes fans were sent home happy when Gomez kicked in the game winner at the 101:49 mark.

The Tritons will end their four-match homestand with contests against Sonoma State and Humbold State next weekend.
