SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. ? The No. 23 UC San Diego women's tennis team extended its conference win streak to 46 and continued its march toward a fifth straight CCAA title with an 8-1 win over the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday. After sweeping Sonoma State on Friday, the Tritons made the short trip north and continued their dominant play. UCSD improved to 10-9, 6-0 in league play. CSUSB dropped to 5-6, 1-6 in league play.
The Tritons are running on all cylinders as they continue the final push of the regular season. Freshman Natalie Varnay helped to avenge the only loss that UCSD was dealt in the first match-up between these squads with a win in the No. 1 singles position 6-1, 6-4 over CSUSB senior Jennifer Joy, who holds the Coyotes' record for all-time singles victories. Historically, the Tritons have had difficulty with Joy but Varnay again proved her ability with the decisive win.
In other action, Tritons Rina Nakano and Roxy Pourmirzaie played their first matches of the season. Nakano cruised in the No. 6 singles position with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kara Jenkins. Pourmirzaie teamed with Tessa Tran to win the No. 3 doubles by an 8-2 count over Xinia Chavez and Jenkins and she also handled the No. 5 singles match with ease, winning 6-1, 6-2 against Ashley Hulett.
UC San Diego will play its third match in as many days on Sunday when the No. 17 Sea Warriors of Hawaii Pacific travel to La Jolla for a 1:30 p.m. match. The Sea Warriors defeated the Tritons twice last season with the second victory ousting UCSD from the NCAA tournament.
