LA JOLLA, Calif. ? It was senior day for the UC San Diego women's tennis team on Wednesday afternoon as the Tritons faced off against a CCAA divisional opponent in the Broncos of Cal Poly Pomona. The Tritons won the match 8-1 and continued their CCAA consecutive win steak, notching win No. 47. UCSD improved its record to 12-10 and 6-0 in the CCAA while CPP fell to 7-9 and 5-3 in the CCAA.
The two Triton seniors, Justine Ang Fonte and Molly Sullens, started the day being honored for their contributions to UCSD tennis and finished with singles victories. Fonte defeated Kaitlin Wooldridge and Sullens defeated Michelle Stock in the No. 4 and No 5 singles matches respectively. Both won by the same score 6-0, 6-1.
The only two freshmen to join the team when they began their UCSD tennis careers, Fonte and Sullens have “been great competitors and meant a great deal to the program,” said Head Coach Liz LaPlante. “Justine has been team captain and a real leader bringing this young team together. And Molly has been so strong for us coming back after a year away from competition.”
In other match news, Ina Dan returned to action for the Tritons after not playing due to injury since mid-February. Dan played doubles with Fonte and helped UCSD with an 8-5 win over CPP's team of Jessica Winkler and Wooldridge.
UCSD finishes its regular season schedule with a road trip to play Cal State LA on Saturday, April 19 at 11:00 a.m. This match will also conclude CCAA action for the Tritons. The Tritons beat the Golden Eagles 8-1 earlier this season on March 7.
