LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 12th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team hit at a .291 clip and swept Cal State Stanislaus 25-20, 25-22, 25-19 on Thursday night in RIMAC Arena. UCSD improves to 22-2 all-time against the Warriors and 19-5 overall, 13-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. CSUS drops to 6-22, 3-15 CCAA. The Tritons were paced by Rebecca Bailey with 13 kills on .407 hitting. Bailey, UCSD's all-time career kills leader, now has 1,399 on the La Jolla campus. Hillary Williamson added 11 kills and seven digs. The Warriors were led by Jen Gee with 13 kills.
Sylvia Schmidt added seven kills for the Tritons, while Katie Condon added six kills. Roxanne Brunsting had a match-high 13 digs. Elaine Chen recorded 37 assists, five digs and two aces.
The first set was close early as the teams would tie nine times. CSUS led 15-13 before the Tritons rallied to take the lead at 18-16 on after a Williamson ace and Kaitlin Potter kill. Leading 21-18, Schmidt and Williamson sent down kills to give the Tritons some room as Williamson sent down the final kill at 25-20.
The second set looked to be going to the Warriors as they jumped out to a 16-10 lead. CSUS led 20-16 after a Gee kill. Condon sent down a kill to start a scoring run of seven straight points. By the time Condon was done serving, UCSD had a 23-20 lead. Up 23-22, Schmidt recorded a kill and Bailey followed to put the set away at 25-22. UCSD hit at a .368 clip in the set.
With the score tied at 8-8 in the third set, UCSD recorded a side out and Condon and Schmidt followed with kills to put the Tritons on top for good. CSUS came within 13-12, but a Williamson kill and Potter and Williamson block tamed a Warrior rally. Kimberly Carpenter entered the match late and recorded the final two kills for the Tritons.
UCSD is back in action on Friday night when it hosts Chico State. The match is a senior night game and UCSD will honor Michelle Torres, Kacey Martinez, Carpenter and Bailey in a short ceremony before the 7:00 p.m. first serve.
