POMONA, Calif. ? Mary Carroll scored a pair of goals to lead Cal Poly Pomona to a 2-0 victory over No. 16 UC San Diego in the regular season finale for both teams Sunday afternoon at Kellogg Field. Despite the loss, the Tritons head into next week's CCAA Championship Tournament as the top seed in the CCAA South Division.
UCSD wraps up the regular season at 13-3-2 overall and 9-3-2 in league, but enters postseason play in a bit of a rut after going 1-1-2 in its last four. The Tritons will make their ninth appearance in the CCAA Tournament, which begins Friday, November 7 at Triton Soccer Field. Pairings will be announced on Monday.
Carroll put the home team on the scoreboard in the 21st minute, receiving a pass from Britany Garrett and placing it past Triton keeper
Jessica McGovern to the left for the 1-0 lead.
The goal ended a stretch of over 355 scoreless minutes for UCSD's defense, spanning five games. Head coach
Brian McManus' squad had recorded three consecutive shutouts entering Sunday's contest.
Cal Poly Pomona would eventually put the game out of reach in the final minute as Carroll picked up the ball just past the midfield stripe, dribbled down the left side, and delivered a shot past McGovern's at 89:36 to cap off the victory for the Broncos.
The Tritons, who had scored just once in their previous three matches, tried their best to answer in the second half, but could not solve keeper Amanda Cunnigham and the Cal Poly defense. Nakisha Gutierrez started between the posts for the Broncos, but left with an injury just 1:31 into the match.
UCSD outshot Cal Poly Pomona 8-7 and held an 8-2 advantage on corner kicks. Freshman
Jenelle Rotenberg took two shots off the bench to lead the Tritons offensively.
The Tritons allowed two goals in a match for just the third time this season. UCSD had not lost to Cal Poly Pomona since 2004.
