No. 22 UCSD Defeats Academy of Art University 1-0

LA JOLLA, Calif. ? Senior forward Natasha Belak-Berger scored her 11th goal of the season to lead the UC San Diego women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Academy of Art University Saturday afternoon at Triton Soccer Field. It was fitting that Belak-Berger was the one to find the net for the Tritons, as she was one of five players honored before kickoff on Senior Day.

With the win, UCSD improves to 13-2-2 overall and heads into the final week of California Collegiate Athletic Association play unbeaten in its last seven matches. The Tritons have won 10 of their last 12 overall.

The Urban Knights, who are in the program's inaugural season, fell to 2-11-1 overall with the loss.

After several missed opportunities in the first half, Belak-Berger and the Tritons finally capitalized in the 56 minute. Freshman midfielder Shelby Wong dribbled the ball up the left sideline and sent a perfect centering pass towards the box for Belak-Berger, who slipped past several AAU defenders slipped the ball inside the far post for what proved to be the game-winner.

The Thousand Oaks, Calif. native has now scored in five of the team's last seven matches and leads the squad with a career-best 11 goals scored this season. Belak-Berger has accounted for more than a third of UCSD's goal scoring in 2008.

The Tritons finished with a season-high 23 shots in the match, with nine shots coming on frame, but only managed the one score. UCSD's defense was stellar, however, limiting AAU to just four shots.

Urban Knight goalkeeper Shelby Magallon was tested all night and finished with eight saves to keep her team in the game.

Jessica McGovern tallied three stops on the way to her eighth shutout of the season. Academy of Art had an excellent opportunity to tie the game late in the second half when Theresa Sianez was awarded a penalty kick, but McGovern guessed right and made a great diving save to make the stop.

In addition to Belak-Berger and McGovern, Triton seniors Kelly Mayo, Amanda Esquivel, and Laura Borenstein were recognized for their contributions to the program in the pregame ceremony.

The Tritons resume CCAA play next Friday when they travel to Cal State San Bernardino for a matchup with the Coyotes scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
