SANTA BARBARA, Calif. ? The 7th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team lost in the fifth sudden-death overtime period to No. 8 UC Santa Barbara by a 10-9 score on Friday afternoon on the UCSB campus. UCSD led 4-2 at halftime and 6-4 through three quarters before the Gauchos tied it at the end of regulation. UCSD scored two goals in the first overtime period before UCSB scored the tying goal in the second overtime period, setting the stage for UCSB's goal in the fifth overtime to capture the game. It was the third meeting between the two teams this year, as the Tritons had won the two previous games by one goal each.
With the loss, UCSD drops to 14-7, while the Gauchos improve to 12-7.
UCSD goalie David Morton set a single-game school record with 19 saves in the contest. The previous mark of 18 saves was set three times, the last by Randy Franke against Pepperdine in October of 1987.
For the Tritons, Daniel Garcia scored four goals, while A.J. Kotanjian scored three times. Chance Vermilyea and Adnan Jerkovic also scored for UCSD.
The Tritons have a quick turnaround after the long game with UCSB. UCSD heads to Los Angeles to face WWPA rival Loyola Marymount at 12:00 p.m.
