LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? The 13th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team took the first two sets but fell to No. 19 Cal State L.A. 25-27, 23-25, 25-18, 25-18, 15-9 on Friday night at the Eagles Nest. UCSD got off to a fast start as Rebecca Bailey recorded nine of her match-high 19 kills in the first set. CSULA rebounded to take the final three sets, handing the Tritons the loss. For the first time this year, the Tritons lost a match after winning the first set of the contest. With the loss, UCSD drops to 15-4, 9-3 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Golden Eagles improve to 16-3, 9-3 CCAA.
In addition to Bailey's 19 kills, Hillary Williamson added 12 kills and Sylvia Schmidt sent down 11 kills. Katie Condon chipped in with eight kills. Elaine Chen had 44 assists, six digs, four kills and four blocks. Cara Simonsen had a team-high six blocks. Roxanne Brunsting had 18 digs, while Williamson added 15 digs. Schmidt also had five of UCSD's nine aces on the night.
In the decisive fifth set, CSULA jumped out to an 8-2 advantage. UCSD climbed back into the set after Bailey recorded a kill, followed by a Michelle Torres ace and a Williamson kill pulled UCSD within 8-5. After Condon's kill pulled the Tritons within 8-6, CSULA scored the next three points, aided by a block and UCSD error. After another Condon kill, CSULA added two more points and a 13-7 lead. The Golden Eagles would close the match at 15-9.
UCSD is back in action next week when it returns home to face San Francisco State on October 24 at 7:00 p.m. in RIMAC Arena.
