CARSON, Calif. ? The 13th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team swept Cal State Dominguez Hills 25-15, 25-21, 25-18 on Thursday night at the Torodome. The Tritons improve to 37-1 all-time against the Toros, having swept the last 16 meetings between the two squads, dating back to the 2002 season. Hillary Williamson had a match-high 14 kills on .414 hitting, with eight kills coming in the final set. Kimberly Carpenter recorded six kills while Lauren Bradley added five kills on .455 hitting. With the win, UCSD improves to 15-3, 9-2 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Toros drop to 1-19, 0-12 CCAA.
The Tritons, ranked No. 2 nationally in service aces per set, added to their average with 11 more service aces on the night, with Michelle Torres recording four aces. Kaitlin Potter had two aces, both coming on the final two points of set two. Karen Reis had a match-high 15 digs.
In the first set, the Tritons would go on a 9-0 run on Sylvia Schmidt serves and take a 9-1 lead. CSUDH came back within 13-9, but a quick kill by Lauren Bradley and a couple CSUDH errors pushed the Triton lead back to 18-9. UCSD would cruise from that point as six different Tritons registered kills in the set and four different Tritons recorded the final four kills for UCSD. Rebecca Bailey put down the set ender at 25-15.
The second set was close and the Toros led by four points on two occasions, the last at 15-11. The Tritons went on a 6-0 run to take the lead at 17-15 after a Cara Simonsen and Kimberly Carpenter block. With the scored tied at 21-21, Katie Condon put down a kill, followed by a CSUDH error to give UCSD a 23-21 lead. Kaitlin Potter followed with two big back-to-back aces to close out the set 25-21 UCSD.
The third set began with Williamson recording five kills to and the Tritons taking an 8-3 lead. After the Toros cut the deficit down to four points, Bradley recorded two kills and a solo block to push the UCSD lead up to 16-10. UCSD would lead by as many as nine points at 23-14 after a Carpenter kill. CSUDH would make a late push at the end but the Tritons would prevail at 25-18. Williamson would finish the set with eight of her match-high 14 kills.
UCSD is back in action tomorrow night when it travels to Cal State L.A. UCSD is the regions' No. 1 ranked team and CSULA is the Pacific Region No. 3 ranked team. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
