CARSON, Calif. ? The UC San Diego women's soccer team only managed eight shots Wednesday night, but two of them found the net and the Tritons held on to defeat 20th-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills 2-1 at Toro Stadium. Sophomore midfielder
Lisa Bradley gave UCSD a 1-0 lead in the first half and
Natasha Belak-Berger scored what proved to be the game-winner in a critical CCAA South matchup.
The two squads entered Wednesday's night's match tied for first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Associate South Division, but after defeating the Toros for the second time in 2008, the Tritons will claim sole possession of the top spot in the standings with three league games remaining. UCSD improves to 12-2-1 overall and 9-2-0 in the CCAA with its fifth consecutive victory, while CSUDH falls to 10-6-0 (8-3-0 CCAA).
The loss snapped a seven game winning streak for the Toros.
UCSD took a 1-0 lead at the 32:32 mark when senior defender
Amanda Esquivel crossed to an open Bradley who beat CSUDH goalkeeper Alyssa Congdon to the near post for her second goal of the season.
The Tritons one-goal advantage would stand until Belak-Berger torched the Toros again in the 64th minute, collecting a nice pass from freshman midfielder
Lindsay Mills via
Shelby Wong and blasting home her conference-leading 10th goal of the season to put UCSD in front 2-0.
The Thousand Oaks, Calif. native has now scored four goals in the Tritons' last five matches and has found the net three times in two games against Cal State Dominguez Hills this season.
CSUDH was determined to get back in the game and the offense kept UCSD on its heels for much of the second half. The Toros got on the scoreboard at the 74:25 mark after a Jessica Murphy corner kick went directly to midfielder Melanie DeSalvo, who tapped it to Karina Jahn for the score.
Despite being outshot 17-8 for the match and 8-3 in the second period, UCSD held on for its ninth win in the last 10 games. The eight shots was the Tritons' lowest total in match this season.
After a perfect 3-0 road trip, UCSD will head home to the friendly confines of Triton Soccer Stadium, where head coach
Brian McManus' squad owns a 5-1-1 record in 2008. UC San Diego will host Cal State L.A. Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
