LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 14th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team came-from-behind to defeat 20th-ranked Cal State Northridge by a 7-6 margin on Friday night at Canyonview Pool. UCSD trailed by as many as three goals and took its first lead on a score by Sarah Bajorek with 2:03 left in the final quarter. CSUN led for most of the game, including 4-2 at half and 6-4 through three. The Tritons outscored the Matadors 3-0 in the final quarter to net the win. UCSD improves to 13-11, while Cal State Northridge drops to 12-14. UCSD is back in action on Saturday with the Harper Cup game against San Diego State. The game is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. on the SDSU campus.
CSUN's Dayna Van Gorder scored two goals (6:01, 2:57) for the only scoring in the first quarter, giving CSUN the 2-0 edge.
CSUN scored the first goal of the second frame as Kirra Kylander connected (4:40), giving CSUN a 3-0 lead. UCSD's Nicole Hermann got the Tritons on the board at the 4:21 mark. CSUN got the goal right back on Allison Brookes score at 4:09 to lead 4-1. UCSD's Bridgette Bugay scored with 2;02 remaining, to close out the first-half scoring at 4-2 CSUN.
Brittan Nordstrom scored at the 6:15 mark cutting the deficit to one, and Natalie Hockett tied the game off a pass at the 4:17 mark at 4-4. CSUN then responded with two goals by Brookes (2:19, 1:42) and the Matadors were back up by a 6-4 margin through three.
UCSD struck quickly in the fourth as Miho Umezawa scored at the 7:22 mark. At the 5:57 mark, Hockett would score her second goal of the game, tying the game at 6-6. The teams would continue to stop each other until Bajorek scored at the 2:03 mark. CSUN had a chance to tie on it's last possession, but the shot sailed high.
