POMONA, Calif. ? Cal Poly Pomona's women's tennis team faced a tough challenge in its 2007 home finale, running into a UC San Diego squad that got off to a quick start and went on to a 7-2 win Saturday at the Kellogg Tennis Complex. Cal Poly Pomona (7-13, 4-5) dropped its third straight match, while UC San Diego (12-7, 9-0) put the finishing touches on another California Collegiate Athletic Association title. The Tritons have won 39 consecutive conference matches and have taken four straight CCAA titles.
The Tritons won two of the three doubles matches and then took five of the six singles contests in straight sets. Kara Fisher picked up the lone singles point for the Broncos, beating UC San Diego's Justine Ang Fonte, 7-6, 1-6 (11-9) in the best match of the day.
UC San Diego got a big win at No. 1 doubles from Marsha Malinow and Ina Dan, who held off a late rally attempt by Cal Poly Pomona's Jenny Tsai and Renee Paquillo, 8-5. Malinow was victorious at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 7-5, over Tsai, while Dan defeated Paquillo, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.
