LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego baseball team split a doubleheader with Hawai'i Pacific for the second consecutive day, winning the first game 8-3 and dropping the second game 8-5. In the first game, Garrett Imeson went 2-for-3 with a homerun and double and two RBI. David Morehead also had two hits and three RBI. His double in the first inning was his 49th career double, a new school record. Daniel Simmons pitched seven innings allowing two runs and striking out five for the win (5-2). UCSD fell behind 6-0 in the second game and put the potential tying runs on base a few times, but could not pull off the comeback. The Tritons are now 21-11, while the Sea Warriors are 17-11. UCSD is back in action on Thursday with a CCAA game against Cal State Dominguez Hills. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. at Triton Baseball Field.
Game One
With two out in the Triton first, Matt Lawson walked and David Morehead hit a double to left field, driving in Lawson. The double was Morehead's 49th career double, a UCSD record. Garrett Imeson then made it back-to-back doubles with a drive to center, giving UCSD a 2-0 lead, driving in Morehead.
Imeson led off the UCSD fourth with a homerun to leftfield for the 3-0 lead.
In the Triton fifth, Tim Mort was hit and advanced to second on Vance Albitz's sac bunt. With two outs and two on, Morehead singled to center for an RBI and UCSD led 4-0.
With one out in the HPU sixth, Michael Kealoha tripled off the center field wall. Danny Lee then doubled, cutting the deficit to 4-1 UCSD. Tripper Chung made it back-to-back doubles and UCSD's lead was 4-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Tim Mort hit an infield single and Albitz followed with a bunt single. With one out and runners on second and third, Lawson singled, driving in Mort, pushing UCSD ahead 5-2. Morehead then hit a sac fly, driving in UCSD's sixth run. Lawson and Imeson then stole second and third, and Lawson would score as the ball would get away from the infielder. UCSD led 7-2 through seven.
HPU added a run in the eighth, making the score 7-3 UCSD.
In the UCSD eighth, Jonathan Erickson was hit, stole second and advanced to third with no outs. With runners on the corners, Erickson scored on a double playball scoring an insurance run 8-3 UCSD.
Game Two
HPU scored an unearned run in the first to take a 1-0 lead. After an error and back-to-back infield singles, HPU scored again to lead 2-0. A two-out single then boosted HPU's lead to 4-0.
Hawai'i Pacific scored two more runs in the second to take a six-run lead.
In the Triton second, Morehead led off with a walk and Imeson hit a bunt single. Silverman then had a bunt single and an error on the throw scored Morehead. Franco followed with UCSD's third bunt single of the inning, driving in Siverman to bring the Tritons within 6-2. John Roth hit a sac fly to center, cutting the lead down to 6-3 HPU. With two outs, Albitz singled to center for an RBI, making the score 6-4 HPU.
HPU's Olmaza hit an RBI double in the fifth, pushing the Sea Warriors lead to 7-4. HPU would add one more in the frame to lead 8-4.
With one out in the UCSD sixth, Silverman reached on a bunt single. Franco then doubled off the center field wall for an RBI. Erickson then reached on a bunt single, putting runners on the corners. The next two Triton batters were retired with HPU leading 8-5 through six.
The Tritons loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh but the final UCSD batter popped out.
