TURLOCK, Calif. ? The UC San Diego softball team split its two games on the final day of the Best of the West Tournament hosted by Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday afternoon in Turlock. The Tritons defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills by a 1-0 score in game one on Sunday before dropping an 8-1 decision to Chico State in the team's final game of the tourney.
Both teams managed only two hits in game one, but it was UCSD who came away with with the victory as junior Jenny Maze clobbered her first home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh inning for the narrow victory.
Fellow junior Melissa Ward tossed her third complete game of the weekend, coming away with her first victory, picking up the shutout win by allowing only two hits with no walks and six punchouts in her seven innings toeing the rubber.
In game two, the Tritons used three pitchers and managed only one run on five hits while Chico State picked up eight runs on 10 hits. UCSD pitcher Lauren Chastain allowed seven of the eight runs in the game, six of which were earned, to go along with three walks and only one strikeout.
Five different Triton batters each picked up a hit, but it was Randelle Bundy who notched the team's only RBI in the game.
Head coach Patti Gerckens' squad will begin CCAA play next weekend, hosting San Francisco State in a pair of doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday afternoons. The twin bill on Friday is slated for a first pitch of 1 p.m. while Saturday's double dip is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
