LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego baseball took 3-of-4 against Western Oregon after defeating the Wolves 14-11 on Sunday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field. Matt Cantele powered UCSD's attack going 4-for-5 with two doubles, a homerun and five RBI. Matt Lawson and Scott Clement also homered for the Tritons. Chris Franco chipped in with three hits and three RBI. Tim Strombel pitched three innings allowing no earned runs to earn the victory. UCSD is back in action on Tuesday, February 6, when it hosts San Diego Christian College at 2:00 p.m. on the La Jolla campus.
WOU led off the game with a single and a double by Pat Kelly, taking a 1-0 lead. Evan Krause picked up a two-out RBI single and Paul Fisher followed that with a double to right center, giving the Wolves a four spot in the first.
In the UCSD first, Matt Cantele singled with one out. With two away, Scott Clement hit his second homer in as many days with a blast over the right field wall, cutting the WOU lead in half at 4-2.
In the second inning, Roth was hit and Chris Franco followed with a single. After a sac bunt by Vance Albitz, David Morehead walked and Cantele then drove a double to the left center gap, clearing the bases for the RBI and UCSD went ahead 5-4.
WOU took the lead in the third, scoring two unearned runs on Fisher's single to lead 6-5.
Matt Lawson led off the bottom half of the third with a solo homerun to leftfield, tying the game at 6-6.
In the WOU fifth, the Wolves scored an unearned run with two outs to take the 7-6 advantage.
In the Triton sixth, Bryan Silverman led off with a double off the left field wall. A wild pitch advanced Silverman to third with one out. Tim Mort then pinch ran and scored on Franco's single to left, tying the game at 7-7. After Morehead walked to put two on, an error on a pick off attempt resulted in a Triton run to take the lead. Cantele then hit a homerun to rightfield, good for two more runs and the Tritons led 10-7 through six.
Clement led off the UCSD seventh with a single, and Lawson reached on an error. Mort then doubled to right center, for an RBI. With one out, Franco doubled to left, scoring Lawson and Mort for the 13-7 lead.
WOU scored an unearned run in the eighth to make the score 13-8.
Cantele led off the eighth with a double and scored on Garrett Imeson's single to give UCSD a 14-8.
In the WOU ninth, Coubi Jiles hit a two-run homer to make the score 14-10 UCSD. WOU's Tony Jones doubled off the left field wall for another RBI. At 14-11, and the potential WOU tying run in the on-deck circle, third base man Jonathan Erickson made a nice diving catch in foul territory to record the final out.
