LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego women's tennis team picked up its third CCAA victory of the season and improved to 3-2 on the season with its 7-2 victory over visiting Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday afternoon at the Northview Tennis Courts. The Tritons improve to 3-0 in league play while dropping the Broncos to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in CCAA action.
UCSD held a 2-1 advantage after a tightly contested doubles portion in which the Tritons won at No. 1 by a 9-8 score and at No. 3 by an 8-6 margin. The Broncos captured the No. 2 doubles match, winning 9-8.
The Tritons quickly decided the match's outcome in singles, winning the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 singles matches in straight sets. Justine Ang Fonte picked up the match-winning fifth point for UC San Diego, posting a 6-0, 6-2 win over Annika You at the No. 3 singles match.
UCSD also got three-set victories at the No. 2 and No. 5 spots on the ladder. Both of those matches were decided in a third-set super tiebreaker because the outcome of the match had already been decided.
Cal Poly Pomona's only singles point came at the top spot where Jenny Tsai handed Marsha Malinow a 6-2, 6-4 defeat.
Head coach Liz LaPlante's squad returns to the court on Wednesday, traveling to face Cal State Northridge at 2 p.m. Following that match, the Tritons will resume CCAA play with a Saturday, February 24 match at Cal State Bakersfield. First serve in Bakersfield is slated for 12 p.m.
