LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 17th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team split its matches on the first day of the 16-team Triton Invitational on Saturday at Canyonview Pool. In the 10-9, overtime win against 18th-ranked Princeton, Nicole Hermann scored the game winner with :37 left. Liz Hahn scored three times for the Tritons, while Sarah Bajorek added two scores. The Tritons then lost 6-4 to WWPA rival LMU. UCSD will take on No. 14 Hartwick at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.
Against the Tigers, Nicole Hermann scored the game winner in overtime on a 6-on-5. Herman struck from the right side with 37 seconds remaining for the win. The game was tied a total of six times. The Tritons fell behind 5-3 in the second period and trailed 5-4 at halftime. UCSD would finally tie the game at 7-7 on a Bajorek goal with 2:49 remaining in the third. Princeton scored with :47 left to regain the lead, heading into the final period.
Liz Hahn and Sydney Gstettenbauer scored back-to-back goals in the fourth, giving the Tritons the 9-8 lead with 6:17 left. Princeton tied the game and sent it into overtime, tied at 9-9.
In the overtime period, neither team scored in the first five minutes as the team's changed sides for the second five minute session. The stage was then set as Larry Sanders' called timeout and set up the man-up offense.
Hahn led the Tritons with three goals, while Bajorek added two. Hermann, Miho Umezawa, Natalie Hockett and Gstettenbauer added single scores.
