ROHNERT PARK, Calif. ? The 21st-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team lost to Sonoma State 30-20, 26-30, 30-26, 30-24 on Saturday night on the SSU campus. It was the second consecutive night for the Seawolves knocking off a ranked team after upsetting 16th-ranked Cal State L.A. the previous night. The Tritons were led by Rebecca Bailey with 19 kills, while Sylvia Schmidt added 15 kills. Natalie Facchini recorded a season-high 33 digs, while Michelle Torres set a career-high with 20 digs. The loss is UCSD's first in the month of October, dating back to the 2005 season. The Tritons drop to 11-6, 5-4 CCAA, while the Seawolves improve to 7-11, 3-6 CCAA. UCSD is back in action on Wednesday night with a match at Cal State L.A.
The Tritons recorded 65 kills as a team, compared to just 47 by Sonoma State. However, the Tritons committed 39 errors, while SSU had 20 errors. For UCSD, Casey Wilson was also in double figures with 13 kills and 12 digs.
In the first game, SSU got off to a fast start, scoring 10 of the first 13 points to take a seven point lead. The Tritons were never able to get back into the game as SSU extended the lead to 20-9 and cruised to the 30-20 win.
With the scored tied at 5-5 in game two, the Tritons sent on a small run to lead 18-12 after a Bailey ace. SSU would come back late to come within 27-24 and 28-25, but kills by Kaitlin Potter and Schmidt put the game away in favor of the Tritons at 30-26.
Game three started off even, with the score knotted at 8-8. SSU scored 10 straight points which included several UCSD errors and the Seawolves were in control at 18-8. Leading 20-10, UCSD chipped away with five straight points on Wilson's serves. Trailing 25-20, SSU rattled off three consecutive points to pull out the win. SSU took the third game 30-26.
The Tritons used a four-point run in the fourth game to take an 11-9 lead. SSU came right back with a run to lead 15-13 after a block assists. The teams would remain close and tie for the final time at 20-20. SSU scored the next three points on a kill and two UCSD errors to lead 23-20. The Tritons would come within 24-23 after a Bailey kill and SSU error. From that point, it was all SSU as the Seawolves wrapped up the match on a 6-1 run.
