LA JOLLA, Calif. - Renee Haynes scored her first goal of the season with only 43 seconds remaining on the scoreboard to lift the 25th-ranked Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills to a 1-0 victory over 6th-ranked UC San Diego on Wednesday night in front of 789 fans at Triton Soccer Field. With the loss the Tritons fall to 10-1-1 overall and 7-1-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play while the Toros improve to 11-1-3 overall and 6-1-2 in league action.
Both teams had played nearly 200 full minutes against one another this season without scoring a goal until Haynes netted the game-winner in the 90th minute. The two squads played to a scoreless double overtime draw in Carson earlier this season, which until this evening, was the only blemish on the Tritons' record.
CSUDH capitalized on UCSD's failure to clear the ball late in the match as the Toros threw the ball in from the left side to Corrie Hirokawa who sent the ball deep to the right side where Haynes collected the ball, lined up the shot, and beat Triton netminder Jessica McGovern to the lower left corner.
McGovern had made five saves in the match up to that point while her counterpart, Alyssa Condgen, made seven saves in the contest.
The Tritons out-shot the Toros by a narrow 8-7 margin in both halves for a16-14 advantage in the match. UCSD also held a slim advantage in corner kicks, taking five while limiting the Toros to four.
Both teams will return to action this weekend, playing the same opponent. The Tritons travel to face Cal State L.A. on Friday evening at 7 p.m. while the Toros will play on the CSULA campus on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
