LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? For the second-straight match the UC San Diego men's soccer team was handed a 2-0 loss on the road, this time by the Golden Eagles of Cal State Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon. With the loss the Tritons fall to 6-3-1 overall and 4-2-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play while CSULA improves to 5-4-1 overall and 4-3-0 in conference action.
Despite the pair of road losses this week, UCSD remains on top of the CCAA South Division standings with 13 points, one ahead of Cal State L.A. who also defeated No. 7 Cal State Dominguez Hills earlier in the week.
Morten Marthinsen netted both goals for CSULA on the day, the first coming in the 10th minute of play as Dennis Idrissa assisted on the go ahead goal. Marthinsen added the insurance goal in the 87th minute as Idrissa and Marvin Sandoval picked up assists on the play.
UCSD out-shot the Golden Eagles by a 11-10 margin in the match and had one more shot on the goal with six, but CSULA was able to beat Triton netminder Luis Salazar twice while his counterpart, Patrick Fry, made four saves and got help from his teammates with two team saves on the day.
The Tritons also took nine corner kicks in the match, compared to only three for the Golden Eagles.
Senior Chase Douglas took a team-high three shots on the day, two of which were on goal.
Head coach Derek Armstrong and his squad returns to action at home next weekend, hosting Sonoma State on Friday evening and Humboldt State on Sunday afternoon. Friday night's match is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. while kickoff with the Lumberjacks on Sunday is slated for 11 a.m.
