LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 12th-ranked UC San Diego women's soccer team scored in the 31st minute and held on for a 1-0 victory over visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills on Tuesday evening at Triton Soccer Field. With the win UCSD improves to 6-0-0 overall and 3-0-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play while the Toros fall to 2-5-0 overall and 1-2-0 in league action.
Ali Lai was responsible for the game-winning goal, taking a brilliant cross from fellow junior Chelsey Campbell and placing the ball into the back right of the net from six yards out. The goal was her fourth of the season and third in the last two contests. She scored both goals in Sunday's 2-1 overtime victory over Cal Poly Pomona.
CSUDH netminder Ashley DeAlejandro played very well on the night for the Toros, making eight saves while facing 16 shots from the Tritons on the night.
UCSD goalkeeper Jessica McGovern picks up her third shutout of the season, playing very well between the pipes for the Tritons and making six saves while facing nine Toro shots on the evening.
In addition to the seven shot advantage on the night, the Tritons also held a slim advantage in corner kicks, holding a 7-6 advantage in that category. Each team was whistled for offsides once.
Head coach Brian McManus and his squad improves on its all-time series advantage with Cal State Dominguez Hills, having posted a 9-5-0 mark against the Toros. The five losses to CSUDH account for nearly 40% of UCSD's losses to league opponents since joining the CCAA and the NCAA Division II ranks prior to the 2000 season.
The Tritons will now head out on the road for a match at Cal State Stanislaus on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. UCSD will then travel a little further north for a 12:30 p.m. match at Chico State on Sunday, September 17.
