Tritons and Broncos Battle to 1-1 Draw

LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's soccer team rallied from a goal down to score the equalizer with less than four minutes in regulation to gain a valuable point in California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Sunday with its 1-1 outcome against Cal Poly Pomona. With the tie the Tritons' record moves to 2-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in league action while the Broncos' record goes to 2-2-1 overall and 0-1-1 in conference play.

The double overtime match was the second one for the Tritons in as many contests. UCSD picked up a 2-1 victory over Cal State San Bernardino on Friday night in double OT.

Dustin Tannenhaus netted the lone goal for the Tritons on Sunday, scoring at the 86:28 mark of the second half with a header to the back of the net off a centering pass from senior Mark Moreira. The goal was Tannenhaus' first of the year while Moreira picked up his first assist of the season to go along with his team-leading four goals.

Cal Poly Pomona took the lead in the 68th minute when Tadd Dolfo headed home the first goal of the game off assists from Aaron Borja and Miguel Abascal. The crossing pass hit Dolfo near the back post where he calmly placed the ball into the back of the net with his forehead.

The match was very evenly played throughout the entire 110 minutes. UCSD held a slight advantage in shots with 16 compared to 13 from the Broncos. CPP netminder Thomas Ryan made seven saves on the day while Triton goalkeeper Luis Salazar made six. UC San Diego took six corner kicks while the Broncos managed only four, but it was Cal Poly Pomona who had a 3-1 advantage in offsides.

Head coach Derek Armstrong and his club returns to action on Tuesday night, hosting rival and travel partner Cal State Dominguez Hills in a 4:30 p.m. match at Triton Soccer Field. Following that contest, UCSD will travel to Cal State Stanislaus on Friday, September 15, before making its way to Chico State for a match on Sunday, September 17.
