LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego cross country and track & field teams place three people on the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 8 teams on Thursday, two on the women's side and one on the men's. All three members will advance on to the national ballot for Academic All-America voting that will be announced in the coming weeks.
Carl Lostrom was the lone male representative from UCSD on the Academic All-District 8 squad, garnering votes after posting a 3.77 GPA in Mechanical Engineering. Lostrom was also the top runner for the Tritons during the cross country season, earning All-CCAA honors after a 10th place finish at the league championships that helped his team to a 3rd place finish.
During the track & field season, Lostrom helped his squad to a 2nd place finish at the CCAA Championships in early May. He had a 6th place finish in the 5000 meters and earned All-CCAA accolades after a 2nd place showing the 3000 meter steeplechase. He also qualified for the NCAA D-II National Championships in the 3000m steeplechase, finishing 16th in the preliminaries on day one, missing the cut for the finals by four spots.
On the women's side, both Madeleine Flint and Mimi Hodgins earned this prestigious honor after posting a 3.93 GPA in Structural Engineering and a 3.33 GPA in Anthropology, respectively.
Flint also had a tremendous spring track & field campaign, setting a new school record in the women's pole vault and winning the CCAA title in that same event to earn all-league honors. She also advanced on to the NCAA D-II National Championships where she finished just one spot away from All-America distinction, finishing 9th in the event, just three inches out of 8th place.
Hodgins has been busy all year long. During the fall, she captured the 2005 CCAA and NCAA D-II West Regional Runner of the Year honors after finishing first in both races. She guided her squad to a CCAA title and a second place finish at the West Regional. She and the Tritons went on to place 7th at the NCAA meet, the program's best-ever finish. In the spring, Hodgins won two CCAA titles at the 2006 CCAA Track & Field Championships, winning both the 800 and 1500 meter races. She also finished 3rd in the 3000 meters, giving her three All-CCAA honors in track & field to go along with the same accolade from the cross country season in the fall. At the NCAA D-II Championships, Hodgins placed 7th in the 800 meters, earning All-American status.
