LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 15 UC San Diego women's water polo team lost the annual Harper Cup to No. 8 San Diego State by a 6-5 score on Thursday night at Canyonview Pool. It was also senior night for the Tritons, as Michelle Perkins, Kirsten Frazer, Flynn LaRochelle and Kaitlin Foe were honored before the game. UCSD jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first quarter. SDSU scored three unanswered goals in the second quarter to lead at halftime. UCSD tied the game mid-way through the third, but SDSU scored the last two goals of the quarter to take a 6-5 lead at the end of three. UCSD had several shots on goal in the fourth, but could not produce the tying goal as the teams remained scoreless. UCSD drops to 15-15 while the Aztecs improve to 20-9.
The Tritons came out strong as Natalie Hockett scored at 6:00 and Nicole Hermann added a goal at the 2:09 mark to give UCSD a 2-0 lead. After SDSU's Anna Gonzalez scored, Kirsten Frazer scored with :31 left to give UCSD a 3-1 lead after one.
The second quarter was all SDSU as Ashley Taylor, Stacy Werner and Rachel Serna scored to give SDSU a 4-3 halftime lead.
Hockett scored her second goal of the game to tie it at the 4:07 mark. SDSU's Ashley McCollum and Jen Schuster put the Aztecs up 6-4 with 1:58 to play. UCSD's Sarah Bajorek scored with 1:23 left and the Tritons were within 6-5. UCSD had two more opportunities, one with a 6-on-5, but neither resulted in a goal as the final remained 6-5 SDSU.
