LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 12th ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team defeated Cal State San Bernardino 13-4 and lost to No. 3 UCLA 7-1 on Saturday at Canyonview Pool. Against CSUSB, seven different Tritons scored. Michelle Perkins led the way with three goals, while Nicole Hermann, Britta Nordstrom, Lauren Woods and Natalie Hockett each added two apiece. Judy Emaus and Sydney Gstettenbauer also scored. In the loss to UCLA, the Bruins scored the first seven goals. Miho Umezawa scored the Tritons' lone goal. UCSD is back in action when it hosts No. 11 Long Beach State on Sunday, March 12 at 12:00 p.m. in Canyonview Pool.
The Tritons scored three times in the first quarter against CSUSB, on goals by Nordstrom, Hermann and Emaus to lead 3-1 after one. UCSD shutout CSUSB in the second quarter, 3-0, as Perkins, Nordstrom and Woods scored to give the Tritons a comfortable 6-1 lead at halftime. CSUSB scored as Sarah Reneker put one in to cut the lead to 6-2. Hermann, Perkins and Hockett scored three straight to up the lead to 9-2 UCSD. CSUSB's Reneker scored the final goal of the third as UCSD led 9-3 after three. In the fourth, Hockett netted her second goal at 6:23 and Perkins scored her third goal a minute later as UCSD led 11-3. CSUSB's Brandy Bray scored the Coyotes' goal in the fourth as Lauren Woods (:48) and Gstettenbauer (:11) scored in the final seconds for UCSD to close the scoring at 13-4 UCSD.
In the loss to the Bruins, UCLA scored twice in the first and three times in the second quarter to take a 5-0 lead at the break. UCLA added single goals in the third and fourth quarters to lead 7-0. UCSD got on the board in the final period with 4:03 on the clock as Miho Umezawa netted a goal.
