LA JOLLA, Calif. -The 13th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team lost in the final moments of the game against No. 12 Long Beach State 8-7 in front of 251 fans on Sunday at Canyonview Pool. In a game that saw neither team lead by more than two goals, the Tritons tied the game twice in the fourth quarter, the last on a Nicole Hermann goal with 35 seconds remaining at 7-7. LBSU scored on its next possession on a strike by Megan Winchell, which proved to be the game winner as the Tritons could not come up with a matching score in the final 27 seconds.
Flynn LaRochelle scored with 38 seconds remaining in the first quarter to tie the game 1-1 after one.
In the second quarter, LBSU scored twice to lead 3-1, before Michelle Perkins and Natalie Hockett netted goals to tie the game at 3-3. LBSU's Rachel Denaro put the 49ers ahead 4-3 with :40 remaining in the half. LBSU then added another goal with :04 in the half to lead 5-3.
Perkins netted her second goal of the game in the third at 2:27 to pull the Tritons within 5-4. LBSU's Marina Cunetti had an answer to put the Beach back in front 6-4 through three.
Judy Emaus started the fourth for the Tritons to pull within one. Hockett scored her second goal of the game to tie it up at 6-6 with 3:03 remaining. LBSU's Christina Wensman scored at the 1:52 mark to put the Beach back in front. Hermann then scored with :35 left to tie it at 7-7. LBSU's Winchell scored the game-winner with :27 left as the Tritons could not match the goal and lost 8-7.
UCSD is back in action on Wednesday, March 15 when it hosts Siena at 6:00 p.m. in Canyonview Pool.
