UCSD Splits on First Day of Triton Invitational

LA JOLLA, Calif. -

The 17th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team split its two games on the first day of the Triton Invitational in Canyonview Pool. UCSD opened the day with a 10-5 win over Pomona Pitzer. Sarah Bajorek scored four times while Nicole Hermann, Judy Emaus and Michelle Perkins scored two apiece. UCSD fell to No. 9 LBSU 10-8 in the second game as Natalie Hockett and Emaus scored two goals each. The Tritons are now 3-4 on the season and continue with two more games on Sunday, wi th the first UCSD match at 9:10 a.m at the Canyonview West Pool.

In the first game against Pomona Pitzer, UCSD led 1-0 after the first quarter on a goal by Michelle Perkins. After the game was tied at 1-1, Bajorek netted goals at the 3:21 and 1:57 marks to give UCSD the 3-1 lead at the intermission. Each team scored twice in the third period as Nicole Hermann and Judy Emaus scored for the Tritons. After three, UCSD led 5-3. UCSD found a rhythm in the fourth quarter, netting five goals. Bajorek scored twice and Hermann, Emaus and Perkins also found the goal in the fourth as the Tritons pulled away to win the game 10-5.

UCSD fell behind LBSU 2-0 after the first quarter. The Tritons then scored four times in the second quarter to tie the game at 4-4 at the break. Hockett's third quarter goal put UCSD ahead 5-4 with 6:33 remaining in the third. LBSU would score the last two goals of the third quarter and first goal of the fourth quarter to take an 8-5 advantage. UCSD could not pull within one possession from there as the 49ers won 10-8.
